Course Reserves

Information for Faculty and Student
General Information

Reserve Items are usually can be divided into several kinds:

  • Items that are already held by the Library.
  • Items that are currently checked out will need to be recalled.
  • Items that the Library does not own will need to be purchased.

Thus, please submit your reserves request at least three months BEFORE classes begin to allow sufficient time to process materials, and to purchase titles not owned by the library.

How to put an item on Reserve for the class

Library will collect the Course Reserves Request Form on April and October each year by email. Please provide complete bibliographic information to expedite your request.

You may want to check the Course Reserves Request Form Sheet for 23/24 fall semester. The sheet will continuously be updated.

Instructors are also welcome to contact libref@hkust-gz.edu.cn for special cases.

Loan Periods

Reserve items can go out on one of the following two loan periods:

  • 3-hour
  • 24-hour

For larger classes, we encourage instructors to utilize the 3-hour loan period, as it maximizes the number of students who will be able to gain access to the material. If an item is requested for more than one course reserves list, it will automatically be listed under the shorter loan rule requested.

Type of Reserve Materials

Items commonly placed on Reserves include, but are not limited to:

  • Print books
    • print books owned by HKUST(GZ): We will place all copies on reserve
    • print books not owned by HKUST(GZ): It takes an average of 1 month to order, receive and process for the books published in China and 3 months for foreign books.
  • Book chapters (Library can make PDFs available to your students if needed)
  • E-reserves (which will not limit the check out period, readers can access online 24/7)
  • Journal articles
