Choosing a Style

Generally, the choice of citation style depends on the requirements of the academic institution or the preferences of the instructor. However, some disciplines or subject areas may have a preferred citation style. Below are some general guidelines for when to use each style. Keep in mind that no matter which style you choose, it is important to consult the appropriate citation style guide to ensure that you are using the correct citation style and formatting for your paper.

Citation Types

Most citation styles have two required parts: an in-text citation and a reference list citation. Together, in-text citation and reference provide a clear and accurate record of all sources used in a paper, allowing readers to verify the information presented and giving credit to the original authors or creators of the information.

In-text citations: the brief citation information that is included in the body of the paper to provide the reader with enough information to locate the corresponding entry in the reference list or bibliography.

Reference list citations the detailed information about a source that is included at the end of the paper in the reference list or bibliography.
